The Dutch wine tradition traces its origins to Roman times; however, after the Middle Ages, Dutch wine cultivation gave way to other forms of agricultural activity. In 1970, the first grapevines returned to the south-facing slopes of the Jeker Valley, at the Apostelhoeve, after fruit grower Hugo Hulst decided to establish a vineyard. The inaugural harvest in 1973 yielded 1400 bottles of wine. Today, Apostelhoeve produces over 180,000 bottles of wine annually. The soil of the Louwberg consists of gravel and marl with a layer of loess on top, making it exceptionally suitable for grape cultivation.
