Air-raid shelter museum

‘Schuilen in Maastricht’ (Shelter in Maastricht) is located in one of the galleries of the Kazematten underground bunker complex. This museum is devoted to the shelters created in Maastricht during World War II and the Cold War.

Many thousands of civilians gathered in the shelters when the air-raid sirens sounded. Even during the Cold War, the shelters here were designed to accommodate several hundred people. Following the détente between East and West, these 'nuclear shelter cellars' were closed down around 1990. 

This shelter exhibition aims to keep alive the memory of the two periods of the twentieth century – World War II and the Cold War – in which air-raid shelters were used, in a place where there were actually shelters: the Kazematten underground bunker complex. The Kazematten complex is part of Maastricht's fortifications. Volunteer guides will show you around. The display cases show objects from those two periods in Maastricht, and you can also visit original shelters. Join us one step down and one step back in time to a museum under our city.
