Steep slopes, fast-flowing streams, narrow paths: in South Limburg, the mountains begin, home to the Dutch Mountain Film Festival.

This multi-day film festival focuses on mountain landscapes, mountain sports, and mountain cultures. Here, you can share your love for the landscape, awe for nature, and appreciation for both distant and local mountain cultures, sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively.

The Dutch Mountain Film Festival is a unique expedition for filmmakers, artists, mountaineers, and film fans. The highlight of all activities is the festival in Heerlen (NL) and Aachen (D).

Theme

In 2024, the theme Mountains and Building forms a common thread in the programming of the Dutch Mountain Film Festival. From a distance, mountains seem untouchable, but in reality, you see various constructions in the mountains. Such as a mountain hut high in the mountains or nearby, halfway up the Vaalserberg of the Institute of Cartopology. Or the roads, tunnels, and cable cars that make the mountains accessible. People built mountain villages and created reservoirs. Even the slag heaps, like the Wilhelminaberg, were once made by human hands. Constructions in the mountains can be admired and regretted; let yourself be surprised by the stories at the festival.

Program

The film program is complemented by lectures, workshops, exhibitions, clinics, a mountain run, and a cycling tour. In short, it's a great opportunity for the avid mountaineer, the healthy outdoor enthusiast, film lover, and regular cinema-goer to visit the Netherlands' highest or perhaps most elevated film festival.
