The location of Limburg’s provincial government complex along and even partly in the Meuse expresses the special significance of this complex for the entire province.
Architecturally intriguing, the Gouvernement aan de Maas/Provinciehuis (Provincial government building) of Limburg (1986) was built alongside the Meuse, with part of the building sitting on an island in the river.
The art collection comprises no fewer than 1350 works. A guided tour takes you around the main rooms in the building, with a brief explanation of how the provincial government functions. The table at which the Maastricht Treaty was signed in the Gouvernement building, in February 1992, is one of the reminders of the Euro Summit in Maastricht.

If you’d like to see inside the Gouvernement aan de Maas and learn about the day-to-day workings of the Province, the building is welcoming back visitors from 1 April 2022. Groups of 15 to 50 people can pre-book a free guided tour. For smaller groups than this, get in touch before your visit. We will then check whether you can join a guided tour with another group.
The standard programme lasts 90 minutes, and you will walk with the guide around the most beautiful section of the Gouvernement aan de Maas. Guided tours specifically about the Maastricht Treaty and its history are also available.
If you aren't able to visit the Gouvernement aan de Maas, take a look around the building in our virtual tour.
By appointment. Guided tours can be requested a maximum of 3 months and a minimum of 1 month before the planned date. Gouvernement aan de Maas is closed on public holidays and at weekends.
