In September 1944, Maastricht was the first city in the Netherlands to be liberated. Nevertheless, the effects of the war in the south of the country were still felt until the liberation of the Netherlands on May 5, 1945.
The Netherlands has known freedom for 80 years. This is unique, and that is why we celebrate it throughout the year with guided tours, lectures, cabaret, podcasts, and exhibitions.
Many souvenirs were made around the liberation of Maastricht and the Netherlands. These include both commercially produced souvenirs and handcrafted items created by people themselves. Many of these objects have been preserved, often stored in attics. They range from extremely unattractive to remarkably beautiful, but they are always fascinating. Behind each object lies a unique story.
