Madama Butterfly is a world-famous opera by Puccini, with the beautiful aria ‘Un bel dì vedremo’ being one of the highlights for sopranos. The story revolves around Japanese geisha Cio-Cio San (Butterfly) who marries US army officer Pinkerton. After he leaves her, her family turns against her. Butterfly has a son and waits for Pinkerton to return, who eventually returns with his new American wife.
The National Opera of Ukraine, Odessa, performs Madama Butterfly in a new staging designed by Karl Spanhak. This modern version features a sober design and powerful voices performing the moving arias and duets in one of the most beloved operas in history.
