Guided tour through Fort Sint Pieter

Maastricht

Step back in time and experience history during a tour of Fort St. Pieter.

At walking distance from the centre of Maastricht, near the Sint Pietersberg, you will find a unique piece of history, as well as the place with the most beautiful view.

At the edge of the city, on top of Sint Pietersberg, it looms before you: the impressive fortification Fort Sint Pieter, built in the early 1700s against the hill of the same name. You are immediately in the middle of the hill country while still being able to overlook the entire city. Fort St Peter is no ordinary fortress. It was built in 1701 under the reign of the Dutch stadholder, King William III, as part of Maastricht's defence line. This fort played a crucial role in numerous historical conflicts, including the famous siege of Maastricht in 1794.

An early 1700s fortress, largely intact, where cannons, embrasures and the guide's stories take you back to bygone times of war and occupation in Maastricht. You will set off inside and outside the Fort and climb to the top of the Fort where you will have the best view of Maastricht and the surrounding Hill Country.

Official Maastricht Guide Chantal Berger: ‘Touching people with Maastricht's history. After all, that's the most fun of all.’
